Libby Hill Park Engagement Photos in Richmond, Virginia

One park. Three couples. Three completely different engagement sessions.
That is what I love about photographing couples at Libby Hill Park.
You have the Richmond skyline, cobblestone paths, stone steps, open grass, and some seriously beautiful light when the timing is right. There is enough variety to create a full gallery without spending half the session driving all over Richmond.
Ginay and Colin had their session here in October. Aly and Chris also chose October, while Natasha and Bryan came in April.
Same park. Different seasons. Different light. Different couples.
And not one session looks like a copy of another.
That is how it should be. Your engagement photos should feel like the two of you, not like you are trying to recreate something you saved on Pinterest three years ago.

Why Libby Hill Park works so well for engagement photos
Libby Hill Park is one of Richmond’s original parks and home to one of the city’s most recognizable views.
There is even a bit of Richmond history here. The view from the hill is said to resemble Richmond upon Thames in England, which helped inspire the city’s name.
But honestly, most couples do not choose Libby Hill because they want a history lesson.
They choose it because it is beautiful as hell.
Within a fairly small area, we can create photographs that feel relaxed, colorful, romantic, dramatic, and very Richmond. We can begin by walking through the park, use the cobblestones and steps for texture, and finish at the overlook while the light changes behind the skyline.
You do not need an elaborate setup or five different locations.
You need good light, a little room to move, and someone who knows how to make one location look like more than one location.

Ginay and Colin brought some incredible color to their October engagement session.
Ginay’s orange dress looked amazing against the stone, greenery, and deep blue evening sky. It was a bold choice that worked perfectly with the colorful style I love to create.
We used the cobblestone steps for movement and texture before heading toward the overlook. As daylight faded, the skyline and glowing park lamps gave everything a completely different feeling.
Their final gallery included colorful portraits, natural walking photographs, and quieter moments overlooking Richmond.
This is a damn good example of why couples should not be afraid to wear color.
Neutral outfits can look beautiful, but a strong color can really come alive against Richmond’s architecture and landscape, especially during the fall.

Aly and Chris also chose October, but their session had a completely different energy.
We started while warm light was coming across the grass. I gave them enough direction to help them feel comfortable, but I did not want them frozen in place and staring at the camera all evening.
That is not how real people interact.
Instead, they walked, laughed, and focused on each other. The photographs feel relaxed because they actually had room to relax.

As the sun disappeared, we moved toward the skyline and created something more dramatic. Their silhouette against the evening sky immediately says Richmond, but the city never becomes more important than the two people in the photograph.
That change from bright, playful photographs to a bold silhouette is one of the best reasons to schedule an engagement session close to sunset.
The light changes. The mood changes. Your photographs get more variety without the session becoming complicated or feeling rushed.

Natasha and Bryan’s April engagement session

Natasha and Bryan came to Libby Hill Park in April.
Their session felt lighter and fresher than the October sessions. The park was filled with spring color, and the warm sunlight coming through the trees gave us a beautiful glow around the stone steps.
We finished with a sunset silhouette overlooking Richmond.
It is the same general area where I photographed the other couples, but the season, clothing, light, and connection between Natasha and Bryan made the photographs entirely their own.
Their session is also proof that you do not need to wait for fall to take engagement photos in Richmond.
Spring has its own personality. The greenery is coming back, the weather can be comfortable, and the evening light can be gorgeous.
The best season is not simply whichever one the internet tells you is popular. It is the one that fits how you want your photos to feel.

What time should you schedule your session?
The last part of the day usually gives us the most variety.
Starting before sunset gives us enough light for colorful photographs around the grass, paths, and steps. As the sun gets lower, the light becomes warmer and softer. After sunset, the sky and city lights allow us to create those bold silhouettes and skyline portraits.
The exact starting time changes throughout the year. An April sunset and an October sunset are obviously not working on the same damn schedule.
That is something I help couples plan.
You do not need to figure out the perfect time on your own. We will look at the season, the location, and the kind of photographs you want, then build the session around that.
What should you wear?
Start with something that feels like you.
Ginay’s orange dress shows how well a bold color can work at Libby Hill. Aly and Chris chose lighter colors that looked great in the golden October light. Natasha and Bryan’s outfits created a clean and recognizable silhouette against the sunset.
Choose colors that work together without matching exactly. Wear something that allows you to move comfortably. Try to avoid tiny patterns that can become distracting in photographs.
Comfortable shoes are also worth bringing. Libby Hill has steps, slopes, grass, and cobblestones. You can always change into dressier shoes when we reach a spot where you want to wear them.
Most importantly, do not choose an outfit that makes you feel like you are dressed as someone else.
If you spend the entire session pulling at your clothes or worrying about how you look, it becomes a lot harder to relax.
Wear something that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and ready to have some fun together.
What if we are awkward in front of the camera?
Almost every couple tells me some version of the same thing.
“We are awkward in photos.”
“We have no idea what to do.”
“You are going to have to tell us everything.”
Here is the truth. You are not supposed to know what to do. That is my job.
You do not need modeling experience, a collection of practiced poses, or the ability to stare romantically into the distance on command.
I will give you direction when you need it. I will help you find flattering light and give you simple prompts that create natural movement. Then I will give you space to focus on each other.
You might walk together, talk, laugh, or take a quiet moment away from the camera.
That is where the real shit happens.
The goal is not to make you look like professional models. The goal is to create photographs that feel like you while making sure you never wonder what you are supposed to be doing.
Planning your Richmond engagement session
Libby Hill Park gives us a beautiful Richmond background, but the location is only part of the story.
Your connection is what makes the photographs matter.
If you want colorful engagement photos that feel natural, relaxed, and unmistakably yours, I would love to hear what you are planning.
Maybe Libby Hill already means something to you. Maybe you love the skyline. Maybe you just saw these photographs and thought, “Yep, that is the place.”
Or maybe you have no idea where you want to go yet.
That is completely fine.
I can help you choose a Richmond location, decide on the right season, plan your clothing, and create a session that fits the two of you.
No stiff posing. No pressure to perform.
Just the two of you, some natural guidance, and photographs that feel like this part of your story actually felt.
